In Praise Of The Open-Mic

Chances are, if you're a performing musician, you've taken part in an open-mic night at your local bar/restaurant/coffeehouse/venue. It's a great way to gain experience, network with other musicians, try out new material, and generally become part of the whole. I've seen friendships start, romantic relationships flare and sputter, professional connections made, music happen. It's a good place to feel part of a Community of music makers. It's a great place to find inspiration. And the best open-mics are completely egalitarian and welcoming, so a beginner can be comfortable taking those first steps as a performer.

Catch an open-mic near you sometime. You might be surprised at what you find....

We here at the House Of Strays wish you a pleasant, patient and musical week.

Here's a tune I debuted (years ago, now) at an open-mic. This tune, among others, landed me a coveted spot in the Tempe Center for the Arts Songwriter Showcase. Please enjoy "Will I Ever Be Dry Again" from my first CD Wills and Won'ts:
