Walkin' In Memphis pt. 3

The International Blues Challenge started in earnest this evening. Yesterday there were some band showcases at various venues, but the actual competition began about 5pm local (CST) time. Before anyone got to play a note, though there were the obligatory hoops to jump through - Artist Check-In, Artist Orientation, purchasing of passes for friends and loved ones, etc. To be honest, the Blues Foundation made that whole process as painless as possible. Considering there are 250-plus acts performing in the Quarterfinals, the pre-show hoopla went very smoothly.

I was able to catch about two thirds of the RD Olson Blues band's set. They were smoking' as usual, and played to an enthusiastic early crowd. We caught Sweet Baby Ray's set later that evening, and he was amazing as usual. I only made the last few songs of Smokestack Lightning's show, but they were killing it. Arizona is very well represented here!

My set went well. There are all kinds of rules - with attendant penalties - as far as the performance is concerned, one being deductions of points for exceeding the time limit for the set. In the Quarterfinals this is 25 minutes. I didn't want to risk losing points for that, so I cut my set shorter than it normally would have been. Anyway, I was happy with the performance and the response. Everyone plays for a set of three judges gleaned from the local blues community of Memphis. Performers stay at the same venue for tomorrow night's show, while the judges move to different clubs.

We'll find out after tomorrow night's performances if we move to the Semifinals, which are held on Friday. The results will be posted on the IBC Facebook page and on the Blues Foundation's website, for those keeping track of that kind of thing!

Please keep the good vibes heading this way!

I can only imagine how exciting this is for you! There will be many new doors opening no matter where you might place in this competition, although I have high hopes you will go on to the next level. Enjoy!!!
